PhillipsX will present Strange Magick, an exhibition of 15 large-format Polaroids by Natalie White, at Phillips Los Angeles from 5 November to 17 December 2026. The works were made in 2022 and 2023 with a 20x24 Polaroid Land Camera, a rare oversized instant camera, and have not been shown before.
White has worked with the 20x24 camera since 2012, using its monumental scale and unpredictable chemistry to explore the enigmatic quality of the medium. The format is unforgiving: each exposure is a unique object, developed on oversized sheets of film from a dwindling stock that White keeps under climate-controlled conditions. The Los Angeles presentation is curated by Richard Kolosky of RK Art Advisory and is accompanied by an original short film directed by Karla Braun, conceived as an integral part of the exhibition.
White first became known as a muse for major artists before establishing herself as an artist in her own right. Born in 1988, she debuted as a solo artist in 2013 with Who Shot Natalie White?, a show built around her years as a subject for other people's cameras, and her practice since has centred on feminist themes and the politics of looking. In 2016 she led a 16-day, 250-mile march from New York to Washington promoting the Equal Rights Amendment. Her work is held in collections including the Carnegie Museum of Art and the Elizabeth Sackler Center.
Her market has gathered pace recently: in the last two years, four of her works have sold at auction for at least three times their high estimates. Strange Magick is a selling exhibition, with the works available for private sale. It is on view at Phillips Los Angeles, 9041 Nemo Street, West Hollywood, from 5 November 2026.
