New images show Mecanoo's long-awaited Boijmans overhaul taking shape in Rotterdam
Mecanoo has released fresh renderings of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen renovation, as the project moves from design into construction preparation with a reopening eyed for late 2030.

Mecanoo has published a new set of images of its renovation of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, giving the public its clearest look yet at a project first unveiled in 2020. The Dutch practice is leading the restoration and reworking of the museum complex, which has been shut since 2019 because of fire safety problems, water damage, overdue maintenance and asbestos. The renderings show a new wing alongside the restored historic building, a reworked museum garden and a reorganised layout intended to make circulation and connections across the site easier to follow. The museum is a listed national monument, and the scheme also covers interior design and landscaping, so the images matter as a statement of intent: the design survived a difficult review intact. That review was the real news behind the pictures. After Rotterdam City Council approved the final design in December 2025, higher than expected costs forced the city, the museum, Mecanoo and the contractors into three months of intensive talks about budgets, risks and working methods. The outcome, announced in mid-October, keeps the approved design largely unchanged while changing elements of the construction process to cut risk. Construction consortium J.P. van Eesteren and Dura Vermeer and installer Koninklijke Kuijpers have now been appointed to carry out the work. From the end of October the team will develop the technical design, programme and site logistics, with building work to follow once that phase is complete. The museum expects to reopen from late 2030. In the meantime its collection remains visible at Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, the publicly accessible storage building that has become the museum's public face during the closure. The renovation is one of the largest museum building projects in the Netherlands, and the new images signal that after years of delay and cost anxiety, it is finally moving toward the building site.
