Whitechapel Gallery will take a specially curated exhibition to the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair this month, marking the gallery's presence at the London edition of the fair devoted to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora. The presentation runs at Somerset House, Strand, from 15 to 18 October 2026, with a VIP and press preview on Thursday 15 October from 11am to 7pm and public hours on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 October from 11am to 7pm, and Sunday 18 October from 11am to 6pm. All proceeds from the gallery's presentation will go towards funding its programmes that support and nurture future generations of artists, the gallery announced — framing the fair appearance as an extension of its charitable mission rather than a purely commercial outing. The gallery has long championed art from Africa and the diaspora in its exhibition programme, and the 1-54 presentation continues that commitment inside the fair context. The announcement places Whitechapel at the centre of Frieze Week's busiest stretch. The 14th London edition of 1-54 coincides with Frieze London and Frieze Masters in Regent's Park, and this year's fair introduces a new strand devoted to modernism, West Wind, led by art historian Nancy Dantas, alongside a large-scale installation in Somerset House's central courtyard. Since its founding in 2013, 1-54 has grown into the leading international platform for contemporary African art, with editions in London, New York and Marrakech. For Whitechapel, the fair appearance extends an autumn season already anchored by Cecilia Vicuña's major survey, Cecilia Vicuña: Living Threads, which opened on 7 October.
