War Child charity art sale takes its theme from a Paul McCartney lyric
Paul McCartney has donated a line from 'Band on the Run' to inspire new works by 60-plus artists for War Child's third Sound & Vision show and auction, raising money for children in conflict zones. The sale runs online from 27 October to 12 November, with the works exhibited at London's Iconic Images Gallery.

More than sixty artists have made new work for War Child's third Sound & Vision charity exhibition and auction, this time taking their starting point from a line chosen by Paul McCartney. The former Beatle picked the lyric "Well the rain exploded with a mighty crash as we fell into the sun," from the title track of the 1973 McCartney and Wings album Band on the Run. Contributors include Genieve Figgis, Alvaro Barrington, Joshua Donkor and Sanya Kantarovsky, alongside Aleah Chapin, Anne Rothenstein, Alice Kettle, Charlie Billingham, Matt Bollinger and George Underwood, the childhood friend of David Bowie who designed sleeves for some of Bowie's landmark albums. The works will hang at London's Iconic Images Gallery from 6 to 8 November, while an online auction runs from 27 October to 12 November. The project is organised jointly by War Child UK and the arts organisation AOAP Projects, whose founder Gemma Peppe curates the show. Money raised will fund the charity's specialist mental health services, education, child protection and emergency aid in conflict zones including Sudan, Ukraine and Gaza. McCartney's involvement continues a relationship with the charity stretching back more than thirty years. In 1995 he joined Paul Weller and Noel Gallagher to record the Beatles song Come Together for the charity's HELP album, supporting children affected by the war in Bosnia. The inaugural 2024 show and auction was inspired by a David Bowie lyric, and Kate Bush selected the lyric for last year's second edition, which raised more than £140,000. Among the works consigned is Barrington's Sunset for P, one of several pieces made directly in response to the chosen line. The sale is the latest in a run of charity art auctions that pair high-profile musicians with contemporary artists, a formula that reliably draws collectors while delivering significant sums for humanitarian causes.
