Stephanie Rosenthal has been appointed artistic director of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, taking up the role in spring 2027. The appointment, reported on 1 October, brings a curator with leadership experience across four continents to the Dutch institution. Rosenthal is currently Director of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Project, where she is guiding the museum towards its public opening on 11 December 2026 and shaping its artistic vision and inaugural programme. Her work there has deepened a transcultural curatorial approach and advanced a collection strategy centred on women artists, First Nations artists and artists from historically underrepresented regions. From 2018 to 2022 she was the first woman to direct Berlin's Gropius Bau, building an exhibition programme noted for its diversity that included major solo shows by Yayoi Kusama, Lee Bul and Wu Tsang. Between 2007 and 2017 she was chief curator at London's Hayward Gallery, and in 2016 she served as artistic director of the Biennale of Sydney. Her career has also taken in leadership positions in Munich and Abu Dhabi. Rosenthal has recently joined the board of CiMAM, the only global network of directors and curators working with modern and contemporary collections, and is a visiting professor at NYU Abu Dhabi. Her appointment places at Boijmans a figure known for working through care, collaboration and close connection with artists and audiences. Her career has moved between London, Sydney, Munich, Berlin and Abu Dhabi, making the Rotterdam appointment her latest step in a trajectory through some of the most significant institutions for modern and contemporary art.
