WIELS Centre for Contemporary Art in Brussels will present Kuzviramba Mamuri, an exhibition of works by Zimbabwean painter Portia Zvavahera, opening on 31 October 2026 and running through 28 February 2027. Curated by Sofia Dati, the show is a mid-career survey that brings together the artist's early paintings, her most recent large-scale works and her first venture into ceramics.

The exhibition is an iteration of the presentation first shown at the Fridericianum in Kassel, Germany, from September 2025 to March 2026, which was the artist's first institutional solo exhibition in the German-speaking world. The Brussels show is organised in collaboration with the Fridericianum and stands as its own exhibition, reflecting the shared context in which the works were created.

In Shona, the artist's native language, Kuzviramba Mamuri translates as "falling in surrender to you", a phrase that suggests letting go of the limits of the rational mind. Zvavahera's colourful, large-format paintings interweave personal memories with collective experience, translating the emotional outlines of dreams into paint in a process she has described as visual prayer. Bringing together works from the mid-2010s to the present, the show traces evolutions in her pictorial language alongside changes in her dream life. Among the works is Imba Yerumbidzo (House of Praise) (2024), a 17-metre-long painting that unfolds across several walls.

Born in Harare in 1985, where she continues to live and work, Zvavahera studied at the BAT Visual Art Studios at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe and earned a fine art diploma from Harare Polytechnic in 2006. Her work is held in collections including Tate, the Perez Art Museum Miami and the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town.
