Bernard Piffaretti brings his mirrored painting system to Kate MacGarry
French painter Bernard Piffaretti's exhibition 'Painting & Caption' opened on 2 October at Kate MacGarry in London, running to 14 November 2026 with works spanning the 1980s to the present.
Bernard Piffaretti's exhibition 'Painting & Caption' is now on view at Kate MacGarry's London space on Old Nichol Street, where it runs from 2 October to 14 November 2026. The show gathers paintings from the 1980s and 1990s alongside more recent work, offering a compact survey of the French artist's long-running investigation into the mechanics of painting itself. Piffaretti, born in Saint-Etienne in 1955 and based in Paris, has built his practice around a single, rigorous procedure: a composition is painted on one side of a central line, then repeated on the other. The second half is never a true copy. As the artist has acknowledged, the act of reproducing the gesture can only produce an imperfect image, and in some works the second panel is left partly or entirely blank where the shapes resist duplication. The system turns each canvas into a record of its own making, with the visible seam between the two halves doing as much conceptual work as the imagery. The London presentation is the latest chapter in a career that has brought Piffaretti solo exhibitions at Lisson Gallery in New York and Shanghai, Cheim & Read in New York, and museums including the Musee d'art moderne de Saint-Etienne and the Musee Matisse. His work is held in the collections of the Centre Pompidou, the Fonds national d'art contemporain, MAMCO Geneva and the Musee des Beaux-Arts de Nantes. The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 5pm, extending to 6pm during Frieze week from 13 to 17 October. The exhibition opened with a preview on 1 October.
