Phoenix museum to stage Southwest premiere of Nike design survey
Phoenix Art Museum will present the Vitra Design Museum's Nike survey, its Southwest premiere, from April 14 to September 26, 2027.
The Phoenix Art Museum has announced Nike: Form Follows Motion, a major design exhibition tracing fifty years of the sportswear company, which will make its Southwest premiere at the museum. Organized by the Vitra Design Museum, the show will be only the second presentation of the exhibition in the United States. The announcement, made on October 19, positions the exhibition as one of the museum's major draws for 2027.
On view from April 14 to September 26, 2027, in the museum's Steele Gallery, the exhibition draws on Nike's DNA archive, a collection of more than 200,000 objects documenting the company's design history. Visitors will encounter the products that built the brand's visual identity, from early running shoes to era-defining sneakers.
Among the icons on display are the Waffle Trainer, the Air Force 1, the Air Jordan, the Air Max, Flyknit and the Vaporfly, each representing a moment when a technical idea changed what athletic footwear could do. Together they chart a path from a small running-shoe venture to a global cultural force. The show also considers how Nike's designs moved beyond the track and the court, becoming fixtures of fashion and popular culture around the world.
The exhibition treats sneakers not merely as consumer products but as design objects shaped by sport, technology and street culture. Its Phoenix run gives audiences in the Southwest their first chance to see a survey that has previously been presented at only one other venue in the United States. The show's Phoenix dates place it among the museum's headline exhibitions for 2027.
