Singapore's arts council opens a metaverse show about climate grief and memory

Singapore's National Arts Council has launched AfterForms, a hybrid exhibition that treats the metaverse not as an escape but as a place where consequence accumulates. The project, the third pilot under the council's Project Arts Metaverse initiative, pairs four newly commissioned virtual environments with a physical exhibition at The Arts House, and asks how digital spaces inherit what physical ones erase.
Visitors move between installations and virtual realms, where presence, movement and breath shape each environment and every interaction leaves a trace. The works explore how digital worlds can carry emotional residue, unresolved histories and ecological grief forward, rather than wiping them clean. Created with TBWA Singapore, the project positions itself as a digital arts incubator, testing what artistic practice looks like when the gallery extends into virtual space.
The four commissions include a work by Cultural Medallion recipient Han Sai Por, pairing sculptural installations with a virtual landscape shaped by land erosion, so that material traces of environmental loss come before an embodied experience of collapse. Artist Debbie Ding draws on the back lanes of Little India for a fragmented digital environment of glitching shophouses and informal spaces, reflecting the precarious economies that shape both physical cities and emerging digital worlds.
AfterForms falls under the council's Our SG Arts Plan and reflects a wider effort to give Singapore artists room to experiment with new formats. By grounding its virtual worlds in real places, real erosion and real neighbourhoods, the show argues that the metaverse is not a separate realm at all, but a continuation of the physical world, with its losses, responsibilities and memories intact.
