Japan's NOTA group has unveiled new villa projects with Tadao Ando and the Swiss firm Herzog & de Meuron, alongside fresh renderings for a Jean Nouvel-designed resort on Yakushima island. The announcement lands days after the hospitality company behind the NOT A HOTEL brand changed its name to NOTA and reorganized its businesses around hotels, housing, mobility, and urban development. Ando's office is designing five villas on a forested coastal peninsula in the Kinki region, facing a wide bay. Circular roofs and organically shaped water basins are signature elements, rendered in the concrete the architect has long favored, with straight lines layered against curves. Set along the slopes, the villas follow a rigorous grid while shifting in height with the terrain so the buildings dissolve into forest and seascape; the villa at the tip takes a circular form with a sky-open void at its center. Ando described the setting as a beautiful yet fierce landscape, calling the task a thrilling challenge. Herzog & de Meuron will design a single villa in Okinawa, its horizontal slab reaching out over the sea so the landscape reads more sharply. Ateliers Jean Nouvel, meanwhile, has released new visuals for NOT A HOTEL YAKUSHIMA. NOTA says it will accelerate development in Kanto, Hokkaido, Okinawa, and now Kansai, targeting 30 announced locations by 2030. The group currently operates ten sites with 1,357 owners and roughly 94 billion yen in total contracted sales, and has created new subsidiaries including NOT A HOUSE, NOT A GARAGE, and NOT A CITY.
