Marcin Dudek rebuilds a Krakow supermarket in 'PAWILON' at Edel Assanti
Marcin Dudek's seventh solo exhibition with Edel Assanti, 'PAWILON', opens on 16 October at the gallery's Fitzrovia space in London, running to 18 December 2026.
Edel Assanti will present 'PAWILON', a solo exhibition by Marcin Dudek, at its Fitzrovia gallery in London from 16 October to 18 December 2026, with an opening reception on 15 October from 6 to 8pm. It is the artist's seventh exhibition with the gallery and the latest instalment in his ongoing series of 'Memory Boxes'. The exhibition centres on the 'pawilon', the local supermarket in the Krakow council estate where Dudek grew up. Coming of age during the dissolution of the Eastern Bloc, the artist works with the strategies of improvisation and imagination that emerged from an environment shaped by instability. For 'PAWILON' he constructs an immersive sculptural environment archiving a space that is now lost or inaccessible, stripping architecture back to a permeable, irrational skeleton. Dudek treats memory as both inspiration and medium. In preparing the exhibition he conducted a small archaeological dig behind the supermarket, excavating discarded capsules and broken bottles that now sit on the installation's denuded shelves, blurring the line between subjective recollection and documentary research. An accompanying soundscape recorded inside the pawilon runs through the space, punctuated by the artist's memories of less lawful activity. Born in Krakow in 1979 and based in Brussels, Dudek studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and Central Saint Martins in London, and his research ties a personal archive to the broader history of spectacle, crowd psychology and the unreliability of memory. The exhibition coincides with his site-specific booth for Edel Assanti at Frieze London, where a specially conceived architectural environment loosely reconstructing his childhood home frames works by gallery artists on the theme of home.
