Guadalupe Maravilla is bringing his healing-centered practice to one of New York's grandest sacred spaces. Creative Time, working with the Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural and Educational Center, has commissioned the artist to create a major installation in the Synod Hall of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Morningside Heights. Consejos de las Estrellas — a title that translates as Advice from the Stars — will be on view from December 17, 2026, through February 7, 2027, spanning the holiday season and the deep-winter weeks that follow. Like much of Maravilla's recent work, the sculptural installation is conceived as a sanctuary — a place for gathering, reflection and respite during a season the organizers describe as both celebratory and vulnerable. Maravilla has built a practice around care and collective healing, drawing on his own experience as a cancer survivor and a formerly undocumented immigrant who crossed the border as a child. His large-scale sculptures, including the multipart Mariposa Relámpago commissioned by the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, double as instruments for sound-based healing rituals. The commission continues Creative Time's long history of placing ambitious contemporary work in unexpected civic settings. Maravilla, known for large-scale works such as Mariposa Relámpago, has built a practice around care and collective healing, often drawing on his own experience as a cancer survivor and former undocumented immigrant. Creative Time's director praised the artist's commitment to creating conditions for healing as an offering to all — a fitting frame for a work that will occupy the cathedral through the darkest weeks of winter.
