Thaddaeus Ropac's Paris Marais gallery will present 'Winter Sun', an exhibition of new paintings by American artist Jordan Casteel, opening on 19 October 2026 and running through 23 December. The show marks Casteel's first exhibition in France and the most significant presentation of her work in Europe to date. Created during the first half of 2026, the new paintings are set in a cool, earthy palette shaped by the quality of light in the depths of winter. The exhibition moves between figurative portraits, landscapes and botanical works, extending Casteel's sustained attention to kinship, place and transition. Its emotional register takes in dormancy and renewal, hope and grief, love and loss, light and darkness — a seasonal logic that gives the show its title. Casteel, who lives and works in New York, has become one of the most closely watched figurative painters of her generation, known for large-scale works that portray the people and communities around her with a colour sense that borders on the topographical. The Paris presentation is the gallery's second major project with the artist, whom Ropac represents in collaboration with New York's Casey Kaplan gallery, and follows her first London exhibition with Ropac earlier in 2026. The opening takes place on Monday 19 October, from 6 to 8pm, at the gallery's space on rue Debelleyme in the Marais. For Paris audiences it will be the first opportunity to encounter Casteel's recent work in depth, in a city where her paintings have so far been seen mainly in group contexts.
