$1.03M Warhol 'Cowboys and Indians' Suite Sets World Record at Heritage's $3.85M Prints Sale
Andy Warhol's complete 1986 'Cowboys and Indians' portfolio sold for $1,031,250 at Heritage Auctions' October 22, 2026 Prints & Multiples sale, a world auction record for the suite, as the 150-lot auction totalled $3.85 million, the second-highest prints total in the firm's history.

A complete set of Andy Warhol's western-themed screenprints has set a new benchmark for the suite. At Heritage Auctions' Prints & Multiples Signature Auction on October 22, 2026, the ten-print Cowboys and Indians portfolio from 1986 sold for $1,031,250, passing the previous auction record of $1,008,000 set at Sotheby's in 2022. The result led a 150-lot sale that totalled $3.85 million, the second-highest total Heritage has recorded for a prints and multiples auction.
The portfolio gathers figures and imagery associated with the American West across ten brightly coloured screenprints. John Wayne, Geronimo and Annie Oakley appear alongside ceremonial objects and a rendering of the Indian Head nickel, a mix that draws together Hollywood, frontier history and the iconography of American coinage. The set offered by Heritage came with its original box, a detail that matters to collectors of editioned work, where completeness and condition carry real weight in the price.
One impression gave the set an extra distinction. The John Wayne print was inscribed as a unique impression and carried hand-applied touches, including a pink-to-blue gradient across the figure's gun and a red stripe on one tie of his bandana. Such manual additions sit outside the standard edition and help explain why this particular set moved past the earlier record rather than merely matching it.
Heritage's fine art leadership framed the result as a meeting point of several collecting worlds, noting that the suite appeals at once to buyers interested in American history, Hollywood and western art as well as to print collectors. The sale total supports that reading: a prints auction built around a single headline lot still drew enough depth across its 150 lots to rank among the strongest in the company's history for the category.
