The Gropius Bau in Berlin has opened the most extensive German presentation of Christoph Schlingensief's work in more than a decade. On view from 9 October 2026 until 17 January 2027, the show carries a title taken from a statement the artist made in 2005: "Es ist nicht mehr mein Problem, macht eure Scheiße alleine" — it's not my problem anymore, deal with your own shit. The exhibition is deliberately not a classic retrospective. Across eight rooms it brings Schlingensief's central bodies of work into active conversation: political actions, theatre, opera, film, installations and performance, contextualised with documentary film and archival material. The atrium opens with the large-scale installation Kaprow City, a work closely tied to the artist's years in Berlin. Schlingensief, who lived from 1960 to 2010, relentlessly crossed the borders between genres — television could become performance, protest could become theatre — and the exhibition follows that refusal of categories. Projects recalled in the show include Chance 2000, Bitte liebt Österreich and Church of Fear, works through which he addressed nationalism, exclusion, religion and the media spectacle with characteristic urgency. The presentation is curated by Raphael Gygax with Dalwin Kryeziu and Christopher Wierling, in collaboration with Aino Laberenz of the Christoph Schlingensief Estate, and is a joint project with the Wiener Festwochen and the MAK in Vienna. As Schlingensief himself put it: "One can fail with enthusiasm, joy and intent." The exhibition is about process rather than finished work — about questioning, doubting and failing as an artistic method. A content note warns that some works contain racist and ableist language, and that strobe effects are used.
