Swallows, mud and market vendors: Gosari wins Kiaf HIGHLIGHTS 2026 award for a nest built from a Korean riverbank
Kiaf SEOUL has named Gosari a winner of its HIGHLIGHTS 2026 artist award, recognising The Barn Swallow's Nest, a work built from mud and straw gathered at Gangneung's Namdaecheon Stream. The artist was shown by Gallery Shilla at the Seoul fair.

Kiaf SEOUL has named artist Gosari one of two winners of its Kiaf HIGHLIGHTS 2026 award, the fair announced in an interview published on 30 October. The prize is part of the fair's artist-support programme, launched in 2023 to back artists building their careers in Korea and internationally. Gosari was presented at the fair, which ran from 2 to 6 September at COEX in Seoul, by Gallery Shilla.
The recognised work, The Barn Swallow's Nest (2025–present), takes its starting point from swallows building nests out of mud and straw and raising their young, watched over by market vendors who cared for the nests almost as if they were their own children. Gosari gathered mud and straw from the Namdaecheon Stream in Gangneung and combined them with onggi clay, forming small nest forms, each measuring 10 by 13 by 10 centimetres.
The timing gave the work an extra layer of meaning: the fair coincided with the fledging season, when young swallows leave the nests where they have been staying and set out on a long journey. The day after the fair closed, Gosari left for Taiwan to begin a residency in Taipei, following the birds' route across the sky in the hope of encountering swallows again there.
In the interview, Gosari described an interest in how different beings coexist and depend on one another, saying that survival rests on mutual reliance and cooperation. Visitors at the fair paused before the small, empty nests, the artist said, sharing memories of their own encounters with swallows and of moments when they had felt connected to nature. The work is both a trace of a life once present and a place left behind, and Gosari hopes it can quietly find a place in the hearts of those who encounter it.
