GDR art-movement veteran Gabriele Stötzer wins Goslar's prestigious Kaiserring
Gabriele Stötzer, a defining voice of the independent art and women's movements in East Germany, receives the Goslarer Kaiserring — one of the most prestigious international prizes for contemporary art — with the ceremony and a survey exhibition opening in Goslar on 10 October.
Gabriele Stötzer will receive this year's Goslarer Kaiserring, one of the most prestigious international prizes for contemporary art. KUNSTFORUM reported the decision on 8 October. Stötzer is recognised as a defining voice of the independent art and women's movements in the former East Germany. The award ceremony takes place on Saturday 10 October at 11am in Goslar's Kaiserpfalz and is open to all, free of charge and without registration. Immediately afterwards, at 12.30pm, the Mönchehaus Museum opens 'VERbunden', a survey of Stötzer's work running until 31 January 2027. The exhibition traces her oeuvre from the 1970s to the present — a radically personal visual language shaped by questions of self-determination, the body, community and political resistance. For Goslar she has created new site-specific pieces, including large-format textile works, photographs and a performance. The jury noted that early aspects of her practice — above all the confrontation between the individual and the masses — have regained a sharp contemporary relevance, giving her work a renewed urgency. After decades in which her contribution was known mainly to specialists, the Kaiserring places Stötzer's art before a wide public at a moment when its themes resonate strongly. The Goslar prize has previously honoured some of the most significant figures in contemporary art, and its choice this year underlines how the art of the GDR's independent scene continues to be reassessed.
