Protests cut Paris pop-up short: Frith Street's Le Molière closes Saturday at 2pm
Frith Street Gallery's Le Molière pop-up at 40 rue de Richelieu will close early — Saturday 24 October at 2pm instead of Sunday 25 October — as Paris braces for nationwide demonstrations this weekend. Friday stays 9am–8pm; Sunday is now closed.
Frith Street Gallery is cutting its Paris pop-up short. The gallery's week-long Le Molière presentation at 40 rue de Richelieu, which was due to run through Sunday 25 October, will now close on Saturday 24 October at 2pm.
Founder Jane Hamlyn wrote to visitors this morning that the decision was taken because of potential demonstrations in Paris this weekend, saying it was made "to protect our visitors, staff and artworks against any incidents that may occur." She added that she was very sad the gallery had only been able to present the exhibition for such a short time in Paris, and invited people to visit before the early close.
The updated hours are Friday 9am–8pm and Saturday 9am–2pm; the space will be closed on Sunday. The pop-up's second edition in Paris had been timed to Art Basel Paris, with works by Dayanita Singh, Małgorzata Mirga-Tas, Tacita Dean and Cornelia Parker.
The early closure extends a wave of Paris art-world shutdowns ahead of Saturday's nationwide protests: Art Basel Paris cancelled its entire weekend, the Louvre, Orsay, Orangerie and Picasso museums announced Saturday closures, and several galleries followed suit.
