Frieze Abu Dhabi has unveiled a new annual exhibition that pairs an established artist with an emerging one from the United Arab Emirates, opening with Mohammed Kazem and Alia Zaal. Titled At Another Meeting Point, the first edition is curated by Dirwaza Curatorial Lab, the Abu Dhabi incubator founded by Munira Al Sayegh, with co-curators Hessa Al Nuaimi and Dania Al Tamimi.

Kazem, born in Dubai in 1969, works across video, photography and performance, using his training as a musician to give tangible form to fleeting phenomena such as sound and light. He was an early member of the Emirates Fine Arts Society and is counted among the Five, the informal circle of Emirati conceptual artists that includes Hassan Sharif, Abdullah Al Saadi, Mohammed Ahmed Ibrahim and Hussain Sharif.

Zaal, born in Dubai in 1989 and based in Abu Dhabi, moves between painting and photography, often starting from archival or family photographs. Her work probes how images carry feeling and shift through memory and time, questioning how reliable what we see really is. The pairing places her exploration of perception alongside Kazem's decades-long study of the senses.

The exhibition runs during the first Frieze Abu Dhabi, at Manarat Al Saadiyat from 19 to 22 November, where 89 exhibitors from 37 countries and regions will take part. The fair, organised with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, replaces the former Abu Dhabi Art and adds sections for regional pioneers, new voices and historical material spanning the Indian Ocean trade routes.
