Berlin Hands EUR100,000 EMOP Gallery Concept Awards to Ten Photography Galleries
Berlin's Senate has named the ten winning galleries in its one-off EMOP Gallery Concept Award 2026/27, splitting EUR100,000 in project funding between concepts for the European Month of Photography 2027.
Ten Berlin galleries have won the first and only edition of the EMOP Gallery Concept Award 2026/27, a EUR100,000 prize programme created by Berlin's Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy and Public Enterprises to mark the 200th anniversary of photography. The winners were announced on 7 October, with the jury's full statement published on the EMOP Berlin website the same day and reported by KUNSTFORUM International. The prize money is split between ten exhibition concepts developed specifically for the next European Month of Photography: a first prize of EUR25,000, a second of EUR18,000 and a third of EUR15,000, with seven further galleries receiving EUR6,000 each to realise their proposals. The winning concepts named so far include BQ's 'Unsung Heroes', pairing Carina Brandes with Jochen Lempert; ChertLüdde's pairing of Annette Frick with Sheyla Baykal; Dorothée Nilsson Gallery's 'Oran – On y sera ensemble' by Margot Wallard; and Galerie Anton Janizewski's 'Du, Ich und die Anderen'. The award is aimed at commercially operated Berlin galleries with a demonstrable, ongoing commitment to contemporary photography. In the jury's framing, the projects promise to question how photography constructs familiarity and strangeness, memory and colonial history, and to open space for lesser-known positions within the medium. The formal award ceremony will take place in November 2026 at Paris Photo, doubling as a preview event ahead of the 40th anniversary of the Berlin–Paris city twinning in 2027. The winning exhibition projects themselves will then be staged from 4 March to 4 April 2027 as part of EMOP Berlin – European Month of Photography.
