Dia and MCA Australia team up on a two-part show for Indigenous artist d harding
New York's Dia Art Foundation and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia will co-present a two-part exhibition by Indigenous Australian artist d harding, opening at Dia Chelsea in February and in Sydney in March, running through August 2027.

New York's Dia Art Foundation and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia will jointly present a two-part exhibition by the Indigenous Australian artist d harding, a descendant of the Bidjara, Ghungalu and Garingbal peoples of Central Queensland. The New York portion opens at Dia Chelsea in February, with the Sydney exhibition following in March; both run through August next year.
For the Dia presentation, harding drew inspiration from visits to the foundation's Land art holdings in the American West, including Walter De Maria's The Lightning Field, Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty and Nancy Holt's Sun Tunnels. A new commission features a series of transfer paintings: canvases inherited from the artist Gordon Bennett, processed with earthen materials and then transferred onto 60 panels that evoke places of significant meaning.
The Sydney show will be harding's first museum survey. Organised around four themes, inheritance, visitation, embodiment and continuity, it includes an expanded wall composition titled Know them in correct judgement, made in 2026 in collaboration with extended family members and informed by their inheritance of rock art.
The two-part format reflects harding's practice of working across continents and communities, learning from time spent on northern lands and with Indigenous peoples in Canada, Sweden and Norway as well as at home in Queensland. Recent work has focused on the legibility, history and purpose of key cultural colours, including kaolin white and iron oxide red, and on the techniques and iconography of Carnarvon Gorge, a site of deep significance for the Indigenous peoples of Central Queensland to which harding has strong matrilineal connections.
