Christie's has revealed a further set of highlights for MAWASIM: 20 Years of Modern and Contemporary Middle Eastern Art, the landmark sale that will be the auction house's first fine art auction in Abu Dhabi. Taking place on 1 November at The Abu Dhabi EDITION, the 70-lot sale marks two decades since Christie's inaugural UAE auction in Dubai in 2006, when it became the first international auction house to hold a sale in the region. The newly announced works broaden the geographic and generational range of the offering. They include Faisel Laibi Sahi's monumental Baghdad Cafe (The Coffee Shop) of 2016, a densely populated panorama of Iraqi social life from the Dalloul Collection in Beirut, estimated at USD 400,000-600,000, and Fahrelnissa Zeid's Composition of 1948-49, a kaleidoscopic abstraction from the period that established her international reputation, estimated at USD 500,000-700,000. Also joining the sale are Mohammed Chabaa's Untitled of 1965, painted as the Casablanca School forged a new visual language for post-independence Morocco and consigned directly from the artist's estate (USD 150,000-250,000); Mahmoud Said's 1952 Portrait of Princess Fadia, an intimate royal portrait formerly in the collection of Queen Farida of Egypt (USD 400,000-600,000); Ayman Baalbaki's Babylon Tower of 2012 (USD 180,000-250,000); Ali Banisadr's Homo Deus of 2018 (USD 350,000-550,000); and Saliba Douaihy's luminous 1980s Paysage (USD 120,000-180,000). These join previously announced anchors including Paul Guiragossian's Noces (1958-59) at USD 300,000-500,000, Samia Halaby's Yesterday (1978) at USD 200,000-300,000, and Mohamed Melehi's A30 (1962) at USD 100,000-150,000. Together the works trace nine decades of artistic production across the Middle East and North Africa, drawing on major regional holdings such as the Dalloul Collection and Sharjah's Barjeel Art Foundation. The sale lands in a crowded season for the emirate, ahead of Frieze Abu Dhabi from 19 to 22 November and the long-awaited December opening of Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. International previews have toured New York, Paris and London, with the Abu Dhabi preview scheduled from late October through the 1 November sale.
