Christie's Hong Kong has announced a new dedicated sale of Buddhist art drawn from a single private Asian collection. Titled Awakening Wisdom: Masterpieces of Buddhist Art from a Private Asian Collection, the live auction is scheduled for 30 October at 10:30am in Hong Kong and will offer sculpture and painting spanning the Buddhist artistic traditions of Asia. The sale is positioned within Christie's 40th-anniversary season in Asia, a concentrated week of auctions running from 27 to 30 October. The series opens with Fine Chinese Classical Paintings and Calligraphy on 27 October and Fine Chinese Modern and Contemporary Ink Paintings on 28 October, followed on 29 October by a trio of single-owner and thematic sales: the Au Bak Ling Collection Volume III, the Ai Lian Tang Collection of imperial scholar's objects, For the Son of Heaven: The Imperial Qianlong Gold Ewer, and Important Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art. The Buddhist art sale shares the final day, 30 October, with the house's Indian, Himalayan and Southeast Asian Art sale, reflecting Christie's recent strategy of staging focused regional sales in Hong Kong alongside its established Chinese art week. The house has been building its Buddhist and Himalayan art presence in the city in recent seasons, including dedicated sales of Buddhist sculpture and painting. Single-owner dedicated sales have become a signature format for Christie's in Asia, where collections assembled over decades by private collectors are offered as standalone events. By presenting the Buddhist holdings of one private Asian collection as a coherent sale, the house is framing the material as a collecting achievement in its own right rather than as part of a general Asian art offering. Further details of the lots, estimates and catalogue are expected to be released through the house's e-catalogue ahead of the late-October sale week, with public previews in Hong Kong in the days before the auction.
