Busan Museum of Art Looks Back at Its Own History to Mark Its Reopening
The Busan Museum of Art is marking its reopening after roughly two years of renovation with To All the Museums of Yesterday, a special exhibition tracing the museum's history from 1960s discussions about a municipal museum to its 1998 building. It runs in the new Project Gallery through 14 March 2027, with free admission.

The Busan Museum of Art is marking its reopening after roughly two years of renovation with a special exhibition about its own history. To All the Museums of Yesterday is on view in the museum's newly established Project Gallery through 14 March 2027, with free admission.
The exhibition traces the museum's story from early discussions about establishing a municipal art museum in the 1960s, through the construction of its current building in 1998, to its subsequent development. Architectural drawings, photographs, administrative records and personal recollections examine how the museum was planned, built and transformed over time.
Works by five participating artists offer contemporary interpretations of that history, highlighting experiences and memories that official records do not preserve. The Project Gallery is a new permanent exhibition space dedicated to exploring Busan's artistic history and cultural heritage, and the show is its inaugural presentation.
The reopening itself was a civic moment for Busan. After a closure of about two years, the museum reopened on 17 September 2026 with a renewed programme, presenting itself as a platform for the city as well as a display space. By exhibiting the paperwork of its own making - drawings, minutes, photographs and memories - the museum treats its institutional history as part of the city's cultural heritage, and the new Project Gallery will keep hosting exhibitions on Busan's art history after this show closes.
The museum reopened to the public on 17 September 2026 after a two-year closure for renovation, and the exhibition frames that reopening as a moment to look backwards as well as forwards. The gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and closed on Mondays and 1 January.
