Sotheby's has wrapped its Hong Kong sales with a combined HK$955.98 million (US$124.28 million), its highest category total in the city since autumn 2023 and nearly 35 percent above the March 2026 figure. Across four sales, 91 percent of lots found buyers, with Modern & Contemporary accounting for the largest share at HK$671.33 million. The evening sale was led by Yoshitomo Nara's Present, which realised HK$71.66 million, above its high estimate, followed by the artist's The Crated Room in Iceland/Drawing Room at HK$61.9 million and Yayoi Kusama's Pumpkin (TWPOT) at HK$60.68 million. New benchmarks were set for Hu Xiaoyuan and Li Hei Di, while Vu Cao Dam's Conversation d'élégantes au jardin climbed to HK$28.96 million — an auction record for the artist and, the house said, the highest price ever paid for a Vietnamese work. European moderns held their own: Renoir's Paysage avec figures fetched HK$52.14 million, a new Asian auction record for the artist, and Monet's Marine doubled its high estimate at HK$24.08 million. A notable feature of the week was The Foujita Lexicon: Works from the Lewis Collection, Sotheby's first dedicated single-artist auction in Asia. All fifteen works sold for HK$67.22 million, with 80 percent beating their high estimates; Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita's Le rêve (Hommage à La Fontaine) drew 32 bids and reached HK$26.52 million, more than four times its high estimate. Several Lewis Collection works are expected to feature in a Foujita exhibition at the Clark Art Institute in summer 2028, and Japan's Musée Ando à Karuizawa acquired two lots. The day sales added HK$217.43 million, with records for Tran Luu Hau and Park Seo-Bo and a new Asian benchmark for a Van Gogh work on paper. Vietnamese art was a standout across the week, with 100 percent of works offered finding buyers. Sotheby's Modern & Contemporary chairman in Asia, Evelyn Lin, pointed to strong international participation and continued appetite for Modern and Impressionist masters alongside Japanese names, among both established and new collectors.
