Julien's Auctions has announced 'Paul Reubens' Big Auction,' a sale of more than 400 items from the estate of the actor, comedian and writer, held live on October 28 at The Groundlings Theatre in Los Angeles — the improvisation house where Reubens developed Pee-wee Herman in the 1970s — and online at juliensauctions.com. It is presented in celebration with The Groundlings, where Reubens' stage show began before moving to the Roxy and airing as a 1981 HBO special. The auction spans the full arc of a four-decade career. Highlights include the slate-gray glen plaid Pee-wee Herman suits, among them the hero suit from the 2016 Netflix film Pee-wee's Big Holiday (estimate $8,000–10,000), custom red Schwinn bicycles such as the full-scale replica ridden at the 2011 Spike TV Scream Awards ($5,000–7,000), rare limited-edition JCPenney dolls, original Pee-wee's Playhouse production costumes, stop-motion puppets and claymation artwork, production scripts and storyboards, and signed posters. Catherine Williamson, Julien's Managing Director of Entertainment, called the collection 'a remarkable archive of that artistry' and said there was no more fitting venue than The Groundlings, 'where it all began.' The celebration starts on October 14, when Julien's and The Groundlings open an exhibition of archive highlights running through the auction, and the theatre will host a screening of original Pee-wee's Playhouse episodes followed by a panel discussion; tickets went on sale October 2. Reubens' career ran from small roles in The Blues Brothers to memorable turns in Batman Returns, Matilda, Blow and the HBO broadcast of The Pee-wee Herman Show, with Emmy nominations for Murphy Brown and the Broadway revival. He co-wrote and co-produced the 1988 Big Top Pee-wee, created and co-directed Pee-wee's Playhouse — a five-season CBS series that won numerous Daytime Emmys — and his story was retold in his own words in the Emmy-winning 2025 HBO documentary Pee-wee as Himself, directed by Matt Wolf.
