The Albertina in Vienna has opened a solo presentation of the American painter Shara Hughes, on view from 9 October 2026 until 28 February 2027. The exhibition brings the Brooklyn-based artist's oversized, feverishly coloured landscapes to the Austrian capital. Hughes, born in Atlanta in 1981, builds her paintings from fields of giant flowers, enchanted forests, mysterious waterfalls, blazing sunsets and starlit horizons. Her canvases stage an overwhelmingly rich inner world where plants mutate, light behaves strangely and motifs carry symbolic charge. The presentation notes her debt to the Fauves' expressive colour and to modernist expressionism, alongside an homage to Georgia O'Keeffe. Her titles often read like emotional confessions, and her surfaces mix oil, acrylic and dye in ways that keep the imagery slightly unstable. On view are recent large canvases including Weighted Blankets of 2022, Sink In of 2026, Pop of 2021 and Tuck of 2021 — the latter on loan from the Kunstmuseum Luzern — as well as Sundown of 2025 on paper. Lenders include the George Economou Collection, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art and Galerie Eva Presenhuber, the Zurich and Vienna gallery that represents her. Over the past decade Hughes has become one of the most visible painters of imaginary landscape working in the United States, with her work collected widely on both sides of the Atlantic. The Albertina exhibition marks her arrival in a Viennese institution, pairing the theatrical scale of her canvases with the palace rooms that house them. It remains on view through the end of February, well into the winter season.
