Hyperallergic rounds up ten Los Angeles exhibitions for October
Hyperallergic's October Los Angeles guide spotlights ten shows, from Roberta Gentry's colour-field visions and Jordan Nassar's embroidery puzzles to a survey of twelve Japanese women in hard-edge abstraction and a Susan Silton retrospective.
Hyperallergic has published its monthly guide to ten exhibitions worth seeing in Los Angeles this October, a roundup that leans into the everyday and its capacity to reveal larger truths about existence, perception and history. Among the highlights are Roberta Gentry's visions rendered in orange and blue, and Jordan Nassar's multi-panel works built from tatreez, traditional Palestinian embroidery, which engage art history alongside questions of cultural erasure and destruction. A group presentation brings together twelve Japanese women artists who shaped hard-edge abstraction, recovering practices that have been under-acknowledged in the canonical account of the movement. Sculptor Ry Rocklen contributes nuanced portraits of place and family drawn from the High Desert and its human-made detritus, finding resonance in barren landscapes and discarded materials. At Regen Projects, Elliott Hundley charts the uncharted reaches of his subconscious by securing hundreds of found images to panels with pins, building dense, layered compositions from fragments of visual culture. The month also offers a retrospective of LA-based artist Susan Silton, whose participatory practice is rooted in feminist conceptualism and a sustained engagement with the world outside gallery walls. Silton's work has long invited audiences into shared processes rather than keeping them at arm's length, and the survey gives her deep engagement with social life its fullest airing yet. Together, the ten picks sketch a city whose art scene keeps finding significance in ordinary materials and overlooked histories. The guide, published by staff writer Matt Stromberg, is part of Hyperallergic's regular city-by-city series directing readers to the strongest openings and continuing shows of the month.
