Yoshitomo Nara's two-gallery Chelsea debut at David Zwirner pairs new paintings with thirteen monumental heads
David Zwirner will present Yoshitomo Nara across its two Chelsea spaces from October 29 to December 12, 2026, in the artist's first solo show with the gallery and his first major New York solo exhibition in nearly a decade.
David Zwirner will open its first solo exhibition with Yoshitomo Nara on October 29, 2026, spreading the show across two Chelsea addresses at 533 West 19th Street and 537 West 20th Street through December 12. The presentation, Nara's first major solo exhibition in New York in nearly a decade, is built to read as a miniature survey, combining new paintings and drawings, recent sculpture and early works chosen by the artist himself. The 20th Street gallery concentrates on two-dimensional work, placing paintings from across Nara's career alongside pieces completed in 2026. The newest paintings show a marked shift in his handling of colour, with more muted, nuanced tones and increasingly diffused brushwork that lends the figures greater atmospheric depth. Other paintings begin as coloured-pencil sketches, developed with washes of translucent acrylic; their figures often carry tear-filled eyes that read as uncertainty rather than the defiance of his earlier characters. Large-format monochrome drawings made with industrial oil-based paint sticks underline how drawing remains the physical core of his practice, while early works from the 1980s provide a historical counterpoint to four decades of imagery. At the 19th Street space, the show turns monumental: thirteen bronze heads created in 2024, each a ten-times enlargement of a palm-sized clay prototype, coated in white urethane. They recall the snow monsters of Nara's childhood winters in rural Aomori, where heavy snowfall piled into enormous shapes. Blown up to architectural scale, the intimate fingerprints and imperfections of the originals become imposing yet quiet presences. The timing coincides with a parallel monumental Nara moment in Washington, D.C.: on October 31 the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden opens Yoshitomo Nara: Sentinels of Stillness on its West Lawn, presenting three aluminium sculptures through November 7, 2027. Together, the two presentations offer a rare simultaneous view of the artist's paintings, drawings and sculptural language at scale.
