Canada in New York has opened Paintings for People, a solo exhibition by Xylor Jane, on 4 November 2026. The show runs until 19 December, with a project-room presentation by Luke Murphy alongside it.

Jane, born in Long Beach, California in 1963, trained at the San Francisco Art Institute, graduating in 1993, and now lives and works in Greenfield, Massachusetts. Her paintings are built from oil, pigment marker and coloured pencil on panel, layering grids, numbers and patterns into dense, pulsing fields. Earlier works carry titles drawn from magic squares, numbers and everyday objects, including Red Blue Crawl and 10th Order Magic Square for Planet Earth.

Her work has been shown in solo exhibitions at the University Museum of Contemporary Art in Amherst, the Santa Monica Museum of Art, Konrad Fischer Galerie in Berlin and Almine Rech in Paris, among others. Her previous show at Canada, Second Saturn Return, was presented in 2022.

The new exhibition's title speaks to Jane's long-standing interest in systems that anyone can enter: counting, pattern, colour. The paintings reward slow looking, their small marks accumulating into larger structures that feel at once mathematical and handmade.

Jane's work has drawn steady critical attention over the past decade. John Yau wrote about her cosmic grids for Hyperallergic in 2022, and her paintings have been covered in the New York Times and Artforum. In 2024 she presented an Art Wall at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive and a solo exhibition, New Paintings, at Konrad Fischer Galerie in Berlin, where she also showed in Dusseldorf in 2025.
