White Cube has announced that it now represents the Japanese painter Shigeo Otake worldwide, adding the Kobe-born artist to its international roster. The announcement was posted on 8 October 2026 and follows Otake's recent solo debut with the gallery, Agoraphilia, which ran from 10 July to 29 August 2026 at White Cube Hong Kong. The gallery will present new Otake paintings at two fairs this autumn: Art Basel Paris, running 20 to 25 October 2026 at Booth B34, and West Bund Art & Design in Shanghai, running 10 to 15 November 2026 at Booth 1F. His work is also part of a two-part survey at the Consortium Museum — the Venice chapter, Nel mezzo del cammin, closed on 28 June 2026, while the Dijon chapter, Per una selva oscura, continues until 21 March 2027. Group presentations currently include the Whitechapel Gallery in London, open until 8 November 2026, and Sophienholm in Denmark, open until 17 January 2027. A first UK solo exhibition is scheduled for White Cube Mason's Yard in spring 2028. Otake's densely layered paintings are made with egg tempera and transferred fresco techniques he studied at the Kyoto City University of Arts. Extended travel across Europe in the late 1970s and early 1980s brought him into sustained contact with the work of Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel and Pieter Aertsen, whose example continues to shape his imagery. He has described his crowded, phantasmagorical scenes as a contemporary reading of Hyakki Yagyo, the night parade of a hundred demons drawn from Japanese folklore. Since a chance encounter with a wild mushroom in 1985, Otake has also pursued a parallel strand of research into mycology and the parasitic fungus Cordyceps, which surfaces repeatedly in his canvases. The White Cube announcement positions him for broader international exposure after decades of working life anchored largely in Japan.
