Nara Roesler New York has opened “the other”, a group exhibition curated by artist Vik Muniz that brings the gallery’s yearlong 50th anniversary programme to a close. The show, which opened on 5 November and runs through 9 January 2027, gathers works by more than twenty artists, including Tomie Ohtake, and asks how our sense of self depends on the view of another person.

The exhibition is the concluding chapter of a year of celebrations marking five decades of Nara Roesler’s career as a gallerist. Founded in São Paulo in 1989, the gallery now operates in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and New York, and has spent its anniversary year handing its programme to guest curators and revisiting the artists who shaped it.

Muniz, who was born in São Paulo in 1961 and works between Rio de Janeiro and New York, has assembled a roster that spans generations of Brazilian and international art: Daniel Buren, Eduardo Coimbra, Hélio Oiticica, José Patrício, Karin Lambrecht, Marcelo Silveira, Marco Maggi, Melanie Smith, Milton Machado, Rodolpho Parigi, Sergio Sister, Tomie Ohtake, Virgínia de Medeiros, Isaac Julien and Julio Le Parc, alongside Muniz himself.

The premise is deliberately open: identity, the show suggests, is not something possessed alone but something formed in the encounter with someone else. By placing historic figures of Brazilian modernism and conceptual art alongside younger voices, Muniz turns the anniversary exhibition into a question about looking — at others, and at ourselves through them — rather than a retrospective of a single gallery’s history.
