The Vancouver Art Gallery is celebrating 95 years as a fixture of the city's cultural life. To mark the milestone, the Gallery will open its doors by donation from 10am to 4pm on Friday, October 2, 2026, inviting visitors across four floors of exhibitions to celebrate nearly a century of art, artists and community. The occasion also brings a new publication, 'Notes from the Vault: 95 Years of Collecting,' which traces the institution's history through highlights of its collection and almost a hundred years of acquisitions. Copies go on sale at the Gallery from October 2, alongside anniversary merchandise — T-shirts, tote bags and hats — featuring archival Gallery logos. From 4pm to 8pm, the regular Free First Friday Night presented by BMO will continue as usual. Western Canada's largest public art museum, the Gallery holds more than 12,000 works and describes itself as the principal repository for visual art produced in British Columbia. Its new building project at West Georgia and Cambie, which broke ground in 2024, was halted and scaled back in 2025.
