Tokyo Art Beat has published an on-site interview with architect Jun Aoki about his collaborative exhibition with artist Richard Tuttle at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery. Rather than following the conventional division of labor — architect builds the space, artist installs the work — Aoki and Tuttle spent two weeks constructing the exhibition environment together, to the point that neither could say who made which part. Aoki, known for boutiques for Louis Vuitton and the Aomori Museum of Art, says he admires Tuttle's open, polysemous works and connects them to his own architectural idea of 'harappas': flexible spaces whose meanings are not fixed. The exhibition, titled 'Almost Sky,' closed September 23, 2026. The interview offers a rare account of a genuinely merged artist-architect process, one that treats the gallery itself as the medium rather than the container.
