Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS) has opened applications for its 2027 residency programmes, covering two tracks with a common deadline of 3 November 2026 at 23:59 Japan time. The application period for both runs from 17 September to 3 November 2026.

The domestic young-creator residency programme is seeking four Japan-based creators with at least three years of activity in visual art, video, design, architecture or curation. Selected participants spend a total of 60 to 90 days at the TOKAS Residency in Sumida, Tokyo, across one of three periods between early May 2027 and late March 2028. They work alongside participants in the programme's curator-invitation track, exchanging dialogue and advice, and present the results of their production in an open studio near the end of the stay. Accommodation in a single room, a shared studio, production costs, living expenses and domestic travel are provided.

The two-city exchange programme dispatches one creator per city for about three months each, in partnership with overseas institutions. The 2027 destinations are Basel (Atelier Mondial), Brussels (WIELS), Dublin (Temple Bar Gallery + Studios), Helsinki (HIAP), Montreal in Quebec (Centre Clark), Seoul (SeMA Nanji Residency) and Taipei (Treasure Hill Artist Village). A planned Berlin slot has been cancelled at the host's convenience. Travel, production and living costs are covered, along with housing, a studio and publicity for events held during the stay, and applicants may apply to up to two cities.

Both programmes require applicants to be registered residents of Japan with at least three years of activity in the country. There is no age limit and Japanese nationality is not required, though students are generally excluded except for doctoral candidates. Each application must include a signed letter of recommendation from an art professional such as a curator, critic or university faculty member. The two programmes can be applied to together, making this one of the broader publicly funded residency calls in Japan this year.
