Myanmar-born painter Thiang Uk stages his first UK solo show at The Sunday Painter
The Sunday Painter in London has opened Forever and a day (24 September–31 October 2026), the first British solo exhibition by Myanmar-born, Baltimore-based painter Thiang Uk, whose luminous layered canvases explore migration, memory and belonging across more than one place.
The Sunday Painter in London has opened the first British solo exhibition by Thiang Uk, a painter born in Myanmar who now lives and works in Baltimore, Maryland. Titled Forever and a day, the exhibition runs from 24 September to 31 October 2026, with an opening reception held on the first evening. Uk was born in Myanmar in 1993 and spent his childhood in Hakha, where animist stories passed down by his grandmother sat alongside the Christian narratives of his upbringing. At the age of eleven he left the country with his family, fleeing political violence, and resettled in the United States. He went on to study in Florida and New York — an associate degree at Daytona State College, a BFA at Hunter College and an MFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art — and attended the Skowhegan residency in Maine in 2023. His work is held in the collections of the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Olivia Foundation in Mexico City. The paintings on show are luminous and turbulent, built from strata of colour, flaring bursts and structures that keep several realities in play at once. Forms melt and reform across horizonless, otherworldly terrain that suggests sea, sky and land without settling into any of them. For Uk, shape-shifting is at once the subject and the method: a way of picturing what it takes to adapt to new languages, cultures and surroundings. Across the exhibition, technical experiment and lived history stay tightly bound together. The work is less concerned with telling stories than with conveying what it feels like to belong to more than one place at the same time — a felt sensation of being between worlds rather than rooted in a single one.
