Monet Meets Ukiyo-e: Yokohama's Immersive MOVEUM Opens Its Second Program on Oct 24
THE MOVEUM YOKOHAMA by TOYOTA GROUP, the warehouse-scale immersive art venue that opened in December 2025, launches its second program on October 24, 2026: 'Impressionist Monet and Ukiyo-e,' exploring the artist's fascination with Japanese woodblock prints, running through March 31, 2027.
Yokohama's newest cultural venue is turning to the dialogue between Impressionism and Japan. THE MOVEUM YOKOHAMA by TOYOTA GROUP, an immersive art museum housed in a roughly 6,000-square-metre warehouse at the Yamashita Pier (Building No. 4 of the pier complex), opens its second program on October 24, 2026, with a run through March 31, 2027.
The centrepiece is the theatre program 'Impressionist Monet and Ukiyo-e: The Beauty of Japan that Enchanted Monet,' staged in the venue's 1,800-square-metre MOVEUM THEATER, where paintings move across walls, floors and sculptural screens in combination with music and light. Creative direction comes from Gianfranco Iannuzzi, a veteran of more than 30 years in immersive art, while academic supervision is provided by the Pola Museum of Art in Hakone, which holds one of the largest Monet collections in Japan.
The theme draws on one of art history's best-known cross-currents: the wave of ukiyo-e prints that reached Europe in the late 19th century gave Western painters — Monet among them — a new vocabulary of bold compositions and flattened space. Monet is known to have avidly collected works by Hokusai, Hiroshige and Utamaro, and the program traces how that encounter shaped his painting.
THE MOVEUM opened in December 2025 with a first program devoted to Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele that drew strong crowds. The Toyota-backed venue positions itself as a new kind of cultural facility for the waterfront district, betting that large-format immersive formats can carry canonical art to a broad public.
