The first trailer for "The Gallerist," Cathy Yan's dark comedy set in the contemporary art world, was released on November 5 ahead of the film's theatrical opening on December 4. Natalie Portman stars as Polina Polinski, a Miami gallery owner trying to steady her business after a messy divorce, with Jenna Ortega as her assistant Kiki.

The story turns on a desperate gamble. Polina is betting everything on her debut show at Art Basel Miami, the biggest stage in the art world, when a fatal accident at the gallery leaves her with a body and no good options. Rather than call the authorities, she and Kiki decide to present the corpse as a provocative work of contemporary art, and the art world, the trailer suggests, is more than willing to believe them.

Yan, who directed "Birds of Prey" and co-wrote the screenplay with James Pedersen, has described the film as a dark satire of the art world, aiming at the absurdities of a market where wealthy collectors decide what counts as art and where provocation can be mistaken for genius. The trailer opens with Andy Warhol's line about art being what you can get away with, and the ensemble around Portman and Ortega includes Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Sterling K. Brown, Daniel Bruhl, Zach Galifianakis, Charli XCX and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, where responses were divided: one trade review called it a facile but fun satire, while the festival's own coverage described it as a furious, funny and tightly wound farce. Roadside Attractions and Vertical acquired the film after Sundance and will release it in North American theatres on December 4.
