Tim Van Laere Gallery in Antwerp is showing a new body of work by Tal R under the title Woman Behind Fence, on view from 15 October to 21 November 2026. The exhibition brings together paintings, crayon drawings and sculptures, continuing the artist's long-standing habit of working across media within a single presentation and letting the different formats echo one another.

The figures at the centre of the show carry names that feel both familiar and invented: Judith, Emma, Ariel and Ursula. They appear in scenes that hover between everyday life and something stranger, with the fence of the title acting as a quiet boundary between the viewer and the world inside the picture. Tal R's handling of colour and surface keeps the images vivid, even when the mood turns unsettled.

Themes of mystery, collapse and transformation run through the works. Bodies and settings seem to shift or come apart, and the crayon drawings add a rawer, more immediate register next to the larger paintings. The sculptures extend the same cast of characters into three dimensions, giving the exhibition the feeling of a small, self-contained world rather than a set of isolated pictures.

Born in Israel and based in Denmark, Tal R has built a career on exactly this kind of invented imagery, where folk-art energy meets a darker undercurrent. Woman Behind Fence fits that pattern while giving the Antwerp audience a concentrated look at his current direction, with the show's mix of painting, drawing and sculpture offering several ways into the same set of characters and questions.
