Sotheby's offers Turner's Roman panorama at £50 million, twelve years after its record sale
Sotheby's London will offer J.M.W. Turner's 1836 panorama Rome, from Mount Aventine at its 9 December Old Masters evening sale, valuing it at around £50 million. The canvas last set the artist's auction record when it sold for £30.3 million in 2014.
In early December, Sotheby's London will put one of J.M.W. Turner's most celebrated late landscapes back on the auction block. Rome, from Mount Aventine, painted in 1836, leads the house's Old Master and 19th-century evening sale on 9 December with an estimate given as on request but communicated by the house at roughly £50 million, about $67 million. Twelve years ago the same canvas set the artist's auction record when it sold in that same room for £30.3 million. The painting has begun an international tour designed to draw collectors in. Sotheby's unveiled it at Rome's Palazzo Rondinini from 29 September to 1 October, describing the display as a homecoming — the first time the work had been publicly shown in the city it depicts. From there it travels to Hong Kong and New York before returning to London for the sale. Turner's panorama grew out of his second stay in Rome, where he began the canvas in Charles Lock Eastlake's studio near the Spanish Steps at the request of his friend and patron Hugh Munro of Novar, completing it later in London. Shown at the Royal Academy in 1836, it spreads the city out beneath an umbrella pine, with the Tiber winding toward St Peter's dome in a haze of morning light. Remarkably, the canvas is thought never to have been relined or restored, with the artist's fingerprints still traceable in the paint. Its provenance adds further pull. In 1878 the fifth Earl of Rosebery, later prime minister, bought the painting as a wedding gift for Hannah de Rothschild, then considered Britain's wealthiest woman; it remained with the family until the 2014 sale. Sotheby's senior British paintings specialist Julian Gascoigne notes that only a handful of comparable late Turner works are still in private hands, and none of similar quality has come to auction in the twelve years since.
