David Bowie Self Portrait Shatters Artist Record at $543,700 in Sotheby's $3.6M London Day Sale
Sotheby's Modern British & Irish Art Day Auction in London totalled $3.6 million, meeting its presale estimate. The star lot was David Bowie's 1996 Self Portrait, which sold for $543,700 — more than ten times its low estimate and a new auction record for the musician-turned-painter.

Sotheby's Modern British & Irish Art Day Auction, held in London on 15 October, totalled $3.6 million (£2.71 million), meeting its presale estimate range of $2.86 million to $4.31 million. Of 115 lots announced, 85 sold — a 74 per cent sell-through rate. Forty-one per cent of works went above their high estimates and 52 per cent sold within range, with only 7 per cent falling below their low estimates.
The headline lot was David Bowie's Self Portrait (1996), which sold for $543,700 against a $46,400 low estimate — more than ten times that figure, and 1,072 per cent above it. The result beat the artist's previous auction record by $456,100, a 500 per cent rise, underscoring the market's growing appetite for Bowie's little-known but steadily collected painting practice. The work has traded twice before.
The sale's strength was not confined to celebrity provenance. Keith Vaughan's Blue Landscape (1958), one of two guaranteed lots in the auction, sold for $42,500 — 60 per cent above its $26,500 low estimate — and has never traded before. On the weaker side, 30 lots were bought in, including Ivon Hitchens's Figure, Courtyard – Greenleaves (1935), estimated at $79,500 to $106,000. Running alongside Sotheby's Frieze Week evening sales, the Bowie result extends the musician's posthumous crossover appeal from music memorabilia into the fine-art auction arena and gave the house a marketable day-sale headline.
The Bowie result continues a trend of music-culture figures crossing into fine-art auction records. Bowie painted and drew throughout his career, studying at Bromley Art College and keeping a studio practice alongside his music; his works surface at auction only occasionally, which helped the bidding. The sale ran alongside Sotheby's Frieze Week evening auctions in the same week.
