The School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University has announced the 2026 cohort of its Traveling Fellows, naming ten artists who will journey across Europe, Asia, South America and the United States to conduct research and find inspiration for their practices. The announcement was published on October 9, 2026. Running since 1899, the Traveling Fellowship is one of the largest endowed art-school grant programs in the United States, offering critical early-career support to SMFA at Tufts alumni. Selected by an independent jury, each recipient receives up to $10,000 to explore locales and communities that will inform current or future art endeavors, with travel treated as a core component of artistic development rather than a supplement to it. This year's itineraries span Albania, Armenia, Chile, Italy, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the Philippines and other parts of Southeast Asia, the U.S. East and Gulf Coasts, and New York City, with one road trip stretching from Los Angeles to Florida. Among the fellows, Lu Adami, AG25 (MFA), will travel to Turkey and Armenia to deepen their research into the Armenian-Zoroastrian deity Anahit, visiting the Armenian Highlands, Garni Temple, Geghard Cave Monastery and Lake Van to generate material for performance, writing and two-dimensional work engaging injustices of the past and present. The program continues a 127-year tradition of sending young SMFA artists out into the world at the formative stage of their careers. Since its founding, the fellowship has given generations of alumni the means to test their ideas against unfamiliar places, and this year's cohort extends that lineage across four continents.
