Galerie Balice Hertling in Paris has opened Shadow of a Doubt, a group exhibition curated by New York-based independent curator Bill Cournoyer, running from October 17 to November 28, 2026 at 84 rue des Gravilliers. The show gathers eight painters whose work moves across the unstable ground between figuration and abstraction: Antonio López, Barbara Goldmann, Chaeheun Park, Jean-François Lauda, Michael Kennedy Costa, Minh Lan Tran, Mona Welch and Wilson Miller.

The title is borrowed from Andy Warhol's Shadows paintings, and the shadow supplies the show's organising metaphor: at once a recognisable trace of a presence and an abstract shape in its own right. Cournoyer asks how much specificity a painting can hold before its image closes down, framing the selected works as images that surface through accumulation, erasure, revision and intuition rather than as fixed descriptions of the visible world.

The line-up mixes generations and geographies, with several artists showing in Paris for the first time. Hong Kong-born, Paris-based Minh Lan Tran, nominated for the 2026 Reiffers Art Initiative prize, has recently appeared at the Lyon Biennale and the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw. Ecuador-born, Berlin-based Antonio López and Seoul-born Chaeheun Park both studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt under Monika Baer, while Frankfurt-based Wilson Miller, born in 1998, presented his first exhibition earlier this year at Turquoise Gallery in New York.

Cournoyer founded the private exhibition space The Meeting in New York in 2016, where he has staged more than thirty shows, and created the Downtown Dealers talk series, acquired by Independent in 2025. His curatorial practice is oriented toward emerging artists and new voices, which the gallery's current programme continues to platform.
