Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art has named Stockholm-based artist Santiago Mostyn curator of its 14th edition, which runs September 4 to November 21, 2027 across art centres and venues throughout Gothenburg. An initial curatorial outline will be presented publicly in Gothenburg on November 18, 2026.
The Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (GIBCA) has appointed the Stockholm-based artist Santiago Mostyn to curate its 14th edition, scheduled for September 4 to November 21, 2027 at art centres and partner venues across Gothenburg.
Mostyn works across film, installation and performance, and describes his practice as a form of visual research in which personal memory intersects with non-aligned histories. Born to a Trinidadian mother, he grew up between Trinidad and Zimbabwe, studied at Yale University, and spent 2024–25 as a Logie Fellow at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute. His curatorial experience includes co-organising, with Joa Ljungberg, the Moderna Exhibition 'With the Future Behind Us' (2018), a wide-ranging survey of artists connected to the Swedish art scene. With Susanna Marcus Jablonski he was also commissioned to create Sweden's first anti-racist monument — the result of a long-term civic initiative that was inaugurated in Malmö earlier this month.
In a statement, Mostyn said he welcomed the biennial team's trust to build a project that 'resists familiar thematic frameworks' while staying focused on tracing the outlines of what he calls a crucial new form of subjectivity. He framed the coming process as subtle, open, and deliberately present-tense. GIBCA's artistic director Ioana Leca responded that Mostyn's artistic practice proposes fresh understandings of place, and read his proposal as an answer to the need to ground our various realities in the work of his peers, beyond historical hindsight or speculative futures.
A project of the independent non-profit Röda Sten Konsthall, founded in 2001, GIBCA is co-produced with the Gothenburg City Library and Göteborgs Konsthall, and also feeds into GIBCA Extended, a regional network of contemporary art actors. An initial curatorial outline of the 2027 edition will be shared publicly in Gothenburg on November 18, 2026.
