The Smithsonian American Art Museum opened Much Here Is Beautiful: Photography Surveys of the U.S. Bicentennial on September 18, 2026. The exhibition brings together 225 photographs by more than 70 photographers from the federally funded NEA Surveys Grant Program of the late 1970s and early 1980s, shown together for the first time. Organized geographically, it spans Lee Friedlander's industrial Ohio, Bruce Davidson's 1980s subway series, Joel Meyerowitz's St. Louis and the Rephotographic Survey Project in the West. Curated by John Jacob and Krystle Stricklin, the show runs through April 18, 2027, as part of the Smithsonian's commemoration of America's 250th anniversary.
