Rosana Paulino opens New York solo at The New School after representing Brazil at Venice
Rosana Paulino's ¿História Natural? opened at The New School in New York on 9 October 2026 and runs through 1 November, Mendes Wood DM announced. The solo follows Paulino's turn representing Brazil at the 61st Venice Biennale this year.
Mendes Wood DM has announced ¿História Natural?, a solo exhibition by Rosana Paulino at The New School in New York, on view from 9 October to 1 November 2026. The show, organised with the university's Vera List Center, marks a new institutional chapter for the Brazilian artist in the United States.
The New York solo follows Paulino's prominent role on the international stage this year: she represented Brazil at the 61st Venice Biennale with Comigo ninguém pode, on view from 9 May to 22 November 2026. The Biennale appearance has anchored a busy season of institutional presentations for the artist, whose visibility has risen sharply across the international circuit this year.
Paulino's practice moves between painting, drawing and installation to address the intertwined histories of race, gender and colonialism in Brazil, frequently drawing on Afro-Brazilian visual culture and on the archives of science and natural history. Her work has been shown widely across Europe this year, including presentations at the Musée d'histoire de Nantes, the Museum Rietberg in Zurich and the Museum Arnhem, alongside Dignidade e luta: Laudelina de Campos Mello at the Instituto Moreira Salles in São Paulo.
The New School exhibition runs in parallel with her gallery calendar: Mendes Wood DM is also presenting Bloom in the Sunlight, Dream in the Moonlight, a solo of new work at its Paris space, from 19 October to 19 December 2026. Together, the two solos consolidate a year in which Paulino has moved from national representation in Venice to sustained institutional and commercial attention on both sides of the Atlantic.
