Rashid Johnson Reopens Hauser & Wirth's Wooster Street Gallery With 'Birthday Boys'
Hauser & Wirth's Wooster Street gallery in New York will reopen on 3 November 2026 with 'Rashid Johnson. Birthday Boys', a new exhibition of mosaics, suspended sculptural figures and a new film exploring the complex relationship between fathers and sons.
Hauser & Wirth's Wooster Street gallery in New York, currently closed for installation, will reopen on Tuesday 3 November 2026 with 'Rashid Johnson. Birthday Boys'. An opening reception will be held that evening from 6 to 8 pm, marking the gallery's return with a new body of work by the Chicago-born artist.
The exhibition takes the relationship between fathers and sons as its subject, a theme Johnson approaches through several bodies of work made for the show. It brings together new mosaics, a group of suspended sculptural figures known as the 'Exhausted Figures', and Johnson's new film 'Birthday Boys' (2026), which gives the exhibition its title. Together, the works continue his long-running exploration of identity, anxiety and care, rendered in materials and forms that carry both personal and collective weight.
Johnson is known for a multidisciplinary practice that moves between painting, sculpture, installation and film, drawing on art history, literature and Black cultural life. The Wooster Street presentation keeps that range in view: the mosaics extend his use of tile and fragmented surfaces, while the suspended figures introduce a sense of weariness and suspension, bodies held in the air rather than grounded. The new film adds a narrative thread, tying the objects in the room to the father-son bond at the show's centre.
For the gallery, the exhibition is also a reopening moment. Wooster Street has been closed while the show was installed, and 'Birthday Boys' is the presentation it returns with. Admission is free, with no advance booking required, and the gallery describes the show as its fall presentation at the downtown New York space.
