AI light figures that copy your movements: Random International debuts at Art Basel Miami Beach
Random International will debut three responsive light sculptures at Art Basel Miami Beach in December, using camera tracking and machine learning to turn visitors' movements into life-sized figures of light as part of Zero 10's largest presentation yet.

Random International will debut a new series of responsive light sculptures at Art Basel Miami Beach this December, presenting three works that translate visitors' movements into three-dimensional figures of light. The installation, titled In all chaos there is a cosmos, will appear at booth Z7 with HOFA.io as part of Generation, the 2026 edition of Zero 10, Art Basel's platform for digital-era art, curated by Karen Archey with Eli Scheinman and described as the initiative's largest presentation to date.
The central work gives its name to the series: a life-sized figure formed across a sprawling arrangement of LED ribbons, where light gathers in flocking patterns before resolving into recognisable human form as visitors move. Two smaller companion pieces, Close To Me / I and Close To Me / II, show figures at half scale inside ordered LED grids, dissolving again when nobody is present. Custom camera tracking and machine-learning mapping drive the effect, so the luminous figures mirror the viewer while seeming to behave independently.
The London-based collective, founded in 2005 by Hannes Koch and Florian Ortkrass, describes the moving light as a form of collective intelligence that briefly takes on the visitor's body before shifting beyond it. The encounter is meant to feel familiar and strange at once: a figure that moves like you but does not quite belong to you. Ortkrass frames the work around a society adopting powerful tools without fully grasping their consequences, while Koch speaks of freeing the pixel from rigid grids so that technology's material form can carry something human.
The debut extends a practice built on audience participation, from the mechanised mirrors of Audience in 2008 through the LED-based Future Self series to Rain Room, the 2012 downpour visitors could walk through without getting wet, which travelled from the Barbican to MoMA and LACMA. Art Basel Miami Beach runs 4 to 6 December at the Miami Beach Convention Center, with VIP preview days on 2 and 3 December, and brings together 272 exhibitors from more than 40 countries.
