$8m Richter 'Mathis' tops Phillips' 23-lot London evening sale tomorrow
Phillips holds its Modern & Contemporary Art Evening Sale in London on October 15 at 5pm BST, a 23-lot auction led by Gerhard Richter's Mathis at £6–8 million, with Banksy, four Hockneys and a Dalí among the highlights.

Phillips will stage its Frieze Week Modern & Contemporary Art Evening Sale in London tomorrow, October 15, at 5pm BST, offering 23 lots at 30 Berkeley Square. The sale is led by Gerhard Richter's Mathis, estimated at £6–8 million — by far the highest estimate in the room. The rest of the lineup mixes blue-chip names with younger positions. Banksy's Keep Ou T, the Brexit-era Heathrow gate image, carries an estimate of £1.2–1.8 million. David Hockney is represented four times — Red Leather Chair and Red and Black Fruit at £500,000–700,000 each, Portrait of Peter Langan and Jean-Marc Moussis at £200,000–300,000, and Deck Gate at £100,000–150,000. Salvador Dalí's El torrent de la Jorneta is estimated at £400,000–600,000, while Josef Albers' Study for Homage to the Square: Wide Sight sits at £400,000–600,000. Cecily Brown's The Smile and Shudder and Nicolas Party's Profile are each estimated at £250,000–350,000; Anselm Kiefer's Laßt tausend Blumen blühen and Marc Chagall's La fenêtre ouverte ou Vue de la fenêtre fall in similar ranges. A Dartington Trust grouping brings works by Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood, and James Turrell's Ein Feshkha is estimated at £300,000–500,000. Maurizio Cattelan's Turisti, Hurvin Anderson's large-scale canvas and Adam Pendleton's Untitled (Days) round out the contemporary section, with younger names including Megan Rooney, Ben Sledsens, Joseph Yaeger and Eva Helene Pade. The sale anchors a busy Phillips October: a Modern & Contemporary online auction runs October 13–23, and a live day sale follows on October 17. Priority bidding for tomorrow's evening auction closed on October 13.
