Flowers Gallery in London has launched Steps: The Spiritual Journey of Peter Howson, a new biography of the Scottish painter, with a book launch at its 21 Cork Street space in Mayfair. The book, priced at £25, was offered on pre-order through the gallery's shop with shipping due to begin in early October 2026. The biography is written by John Miller, described by the gallery as the ideal biographer for the artist. Miller is a pastor and priest who spent three decades working in a working-class community shaped by poverty, an experience the gallery suggests gives him particular insight into the themes of faith, struggle and redemption that run through Howson's paintings. Howson, born in London in 1958, emerged in the 1980s as a focal figure of the so-called New Glasgow Boys and went on to become one of Britain's leading figurative painters. He served as an official war artist for the Imperial War Museum during the Bosnian war in 1993 and 1994, and his work is held in public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Tate, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. The launch followed the gallery's exhibition Peter Howson: Salvation, which ran at Cork Street from 10 September to 10 October 2026. The show drew press attention, with reviews by Waldemar Januszczak in The Sunday Times on 20 September and by Jonathan Evens in Seen & Unseen on 2 October.
